Embracing curiosity.

In my last post Writing Challenges I said I was going to report back on my experience of joining writing groups that I’d highlighted, but I’ve been sidetracked by another topic and thought I’d follow the breadcrumbs instead. What I’ve been thinking about is curiosity and how important it is to have a sense of it, as we move through the world.

From tomorrow, I will be officially unemployed. I quit my job working in agencies without a job to go to and right now, have no plan except knowing that I don’t want to keep doing what I’ve been doing for the past 20 years. That I want to find out where my experience, knowledge and skills can take me next. To follow my curiousity. This is scary but also liberating. To not need to know right now. I also know how lucky I am, that I have the luxury of trying to work it out.

But what does this have to do with writing? Everything, because feeding curiosity is the fuel that ignites creativity. It is the fuel that will drive us to explore new territories and unearth hidden gems. Whether you're a writer, content creator, or someone simply with a thirst for knowledge and curiosity, following the breadcrumbs has the power to transform your work from middle-of-the-road to something sprinkled with stardust.

HOW TO GET CURIOUS;

1. Embrace the Unknown: Allow yourself to wander into uncharted territory, free from expectations about what should and shouldn’t happen. Take risks, try new things, and don't be afraid to fail. This is where true creativity flies.

2. Develop a Curious Mindset: This is essential for nurturing creativity. Ask questions, seek out new experiences, and see the world like a child does. Keep a notebook handy to jot down ideas, observations, and inspiration that will strike you throughout the day. By cultivating curiosity in your everyday life, you'll fuel your creativity and open yourself up to a world of possibilities.

3. Follow Your Passions: Whether you're writing a book, creating content, or experimenting with new ideas, follow your passions and subjects that ignite your interest. Dive deep into topics that fascinate you, and don't be afraid to let your curiosity lead the way. Your enthusiasm will shine through in your work, capturing the attention of your audience and inspiring others to follow their own passions.

4. Embrace Failure: Failure is inevitable, but it's also invaluable. It is  an opportunity to learn and grow, rather than a setback. Use it as a stepping stone to success, to refine your ideas and approaches until you find what works. Remember, every great writer or creator has faced rejection and failure along the way. It's how you respond to adversity that defines your journey.

5. Experiment Freely: Try new styles, formats, and approaches, and see where your curiosity takes you. Whether it's exploring different genres, mediums, or techniques, experimentation is key to unlocking your creative potential and discovering your unique voice.

In truth, following curiosity is not just a journey, but a way of being.  By embracing the unknown, cultivating a curious mindset, following your passions, accepting you will fail and experimenting freely, you'll unlock new levels of creativity. So, go forth with curiosity and watch as your work and ideas flourish beyond your wildest dreams.

I would love to hear how your curiosity led you to your successes (and failures).
